Anti nausea meds for Gastroparesis

by Jefa, Aug 02, 2008 08:42PM
My 30 year old daughter has just been diagnosed with idiopathic gastroparesis after suffering vomitting, nausea, diarrhea or constipation for 5 years.  She is also borderline bi-polar II.  One of her big problems is she has reactions to many meds.  For instance, she cannot take any antihistamines, nor phenergan, or compazine because they result in severe akathesia.  She can tolerate Reglan and is on that 4 times a day and has been prescribed Zofran, which helps some.   However, her insurance company will only pay for 12 Zofran (generic) per month and she needs to take 4 a day!  She has been off work for two months and they've given her an unpaid leave for two more months but she loses her job if she can't go back to a 40 hour work week by Oct. 1st.  She is single and dependent on herself for livelihood.  Can you recommend any other anti-nausea medications or have suggestions for coping and improving her quality of life with Gastroparesis?

I'm suffering from some of the same problems. I can't take Reglan, due to a bad intolerance to it.  And Phenergan and Compazine just don't work.  I see that there are other meds and patches out there, but they are all for chemotherapy patients.  What do gastroparesis patients supposed to do?  I honestly don't know what we're supposed to do.  Can anybody give a suggestion?

You may want to inquire about the use of Marinol. It's somewhat controversail, but can help in some cases.

I feel for your daughter as I have been fighting this for a while now. I recently had a feeding tube placed for this disease that has gotten the best of me. I had a gastric pacemaker implanted last Aug. for one year it worked and I do not regreat getting it. But recently that stopped working and could eat at all so they place a perm feeding tube in. I am also not doing so well with that. I am looking into other options. I am so sorry for your daughter. I wish her the best of luck
