Antibiotics and problems breathing

by Newteacher, May 04, 2002 12:00AM
I was on minocycline for acne for about a year.  After a year, my Dr. decreased my dose. (I never had acne problems before the past 2 years). I broke out, so he increased my dose again to 100 mg 2X/day. Since then, I have had problems with vertigo, dizziness, fatigue, weakness, tremor. In the past 3 weeks, I have suddenly developed this feeling that my throat is tight/closing. I have been to the ER, where they checked me for mono, said my throat was fine, and sent mt home. My primary care doc did a CBC, and said all was normal, but told me to get off the minocycline. I stopped one week ago, and since then have felt slightly better (no breakout!), but have continued to have the throat problem, along with fatigue. I am a long distance runner and suddenly can't train. I have these "attacks" where my throat feels very swollen, accompanied by lots of burping and sharp pains to my esophogus. Could this all be a result of long-term antibiotic use? Could I have damaged my liver with it? I have cut out yeast from my diet, since others have suggested an over-growth of yeast from the antibiotic.

Hi, you will find that many people here have had problems with antibiotic use. I developed acute gastritis and inflammation of the colon and extreme exhaustion after a short, intense course of antibiotics, a lower long term dose can also cause problems. Antibiotics disrupt the natural ecology of your internal system, more than just yeast overgrowth, it can also kill the good bacteria in your gut, and this imbalance can lead to inflammation. I developed a lot of gas and although I don't get sharp pain in my esophogus, I did in my stomach, and I feel like food gets stuck in my esophogus. I would suggest you start taking probiotics (available from health food shops) and fresh aloe vera juice- these have helped some of the people here with effects of antibiotic use. All the Best.

.......Three things may be causing your condition: 1) Esophageal Spasms 2) Heartburn 3) Gallbladder.  I would stop alcohol (if you drink,)fast or greasy foods, immediately get an upper GI x ray and an ultrasound to rule out any gallbladder trouble. Antibiotics unless there is a clear and undisputable diagnosis of an infection should, at all times b avoided.

Take care
