Back Pain

by fleming__0, Sep 01, 1998 12:00AM

I have had severe back pain for sometime now(3 months) and when I use the bathroom it's mucusy.  I took some antibiotcs for a sinus infection and the stomach problems went away for awhile.  Now they are starting to return.  The back pain has always been present.
I'm only 27 years old and my Dr. keeps telling me that I just need to eat more fruts and vegitables and that my back pain is just  a pinched nerve.  I just dont think thats so.

   Any sugestions would be grateful

Dear Jeremy.
I am uncertain whether there is a relationship between your back pain and the change in bowel pattern.  You need to have an evaluation of your Gi tract including a look for infectious causes for your symptoms.  Patients who have taken antibiotics may develop an infection with Clostridium difficile which can cause diarrhea and mucous.  Structural causes e.g. inflammatory bowel disease must also be excluded before your symptoms can be attributed to irritable bowel syndrome.
This information is presented for educational purposes only.  Always ask specific questions to your personal physician.
