Barium Swallow

Hi,

I have a question regarding GERD.. I frequently experience heartburn,and this all started with my first pregnancy back in 1998.  I went for a GI series test after having the baby..and after drinking the barium it actually cured me.
I was fine until 2006..after much stress and anxiety I developed heartburn again, went back for another test and same thing it went away.  I guess its temporary for  while, but its sure better than taking antacids all the time.
So my question is..I have milder symptoms and am supposed to go again for another test, however, I would like to know if there is anything else out there similar to the barium that I can get over the counter.    Does maalox or pepto bismal have the same effect?
I sure am trying everythin g  possible not to go back for this test again.
I dont like the radiation exposure.

I am not a doctor, but doubt the barium cured the problem.  It probably was coincidence.  You probably should talk with your doc.
