Barium enema; urgent that it is expelled IMMEDIATELY

by Colonoscopy_0128, Feb 02, 2003 12:00AM
Hello All…

Yesterday, Saturday, I underwent the most painful, degrading, and disgusting experience of my distinguished career… I spent two hours in the local emergency room undergoing the forced removal of the impacted remanents of the barium enema I had received as a part of routine diagnostic xray and GI tests back on Tuesday, 96 hours earlier.

Given the seriousness of the problem, and figuring that there is a chance that others might face a similar scenario, I am posting this warning.

WARNING:
If you ever are given the barium enema treatment, insist that you are given IMMEDIATE and AGGRESSIVE steps to positively expel the mixture. Right then and there, before leaving the medical testing / xray facility.

I was not given such, and the results were absolutely disastrous.

Hope this information is useful to others.

I'm so sorry you had to go thru that!  :(

most places mix a laxative in with the barium, so as to avoid that problem.

after any gi study with barium, it is important to drink lots and lots and lots and lots of water.

I hope you are doing better
