Bilirubin high, gallbladder polyp, high blood pressure

by Bilifletch, Apr 01, 2005 12:00AM
I am a 34 year old female.  Just started Avapro for high blood pressure.  I had an ultrasound that showed a polyp in the gallbladder and a cyst in the kidney.  Lower back pain on the left side.  (tolerable, but almost constant over the last week) My bilirubin is over 2.5.  Had hepatitis as a complication of mono many years ago.  Could any of these be related?  I have been referred to a GI.  What can I expect?
Thank you.

Gallbladder polyps can sometimes lead to abdominal pain.  If there is blockage of the biliary ducts, that can lead to an elevation of bilirubin.

What to do about the gallbladder polyp would depend on its size.  If the polyp is smaller than 10mm can be observed with serial ultrasound studies.

Polyps larger than that need to be evaluated for gallbladder cancer.  This is normally done via a cholecystectomy and examining the gallbladder in pathology.

Discussion of these options should be done with your GI physician.

Followup with your personal physician is essential.

I went to the GI yesterday and they are not worried about the polyp.  I never found out the size, but apparently it was not very large.  I don't even think they are going to follow up with ultrasounds later.
Also, beginning the Sunday before last (a week and 2 days ago), I developed a rash on one of my lower arms.  Red patch and small bumps that itch.  It went away for a day or so and then reappeared on my upper arm.  Could the higher bilirubin cause that?  They said I may have Gilbert's Syndrome, but I know that isn't supposed to cause any symptoms.

To: anyone who can help.....
I am only 21 years old but i have been suffering from abdominal pain in the upper right quadron of my abdomen for about a year now. It has not only increased in severity but frequency as well. I have had three ultra sounds, two cat scans, a hydascan(which was inconclusive) and some x-rays. The only test that seemed to bring back any sufficient results were the ulra sounds which have shown that I have an abnormal growth near the neck of my gall bladder- in my most recent ultra sound last week they have narrowed this 'abnormal growth' down to either a gallbladder polyp or stone. Either of which they say is very small in size and do not seem to be worried about, which would be fine with me except i a m still having the abdominal pain every day. it often disrupts what i am doing as i have a full time job and often find myself in pain at work- especially after lunch. Can anyone help me any type of info they may have to what i should do? should i get proceedures done? if so, what type??
