Bleeding Profusely Off/On From Gi Tract...?

by AnnelieseR, Dec 30, 2001 12:00AM
Hi... I recently started having a problem with bleed profusely from my gi tract these last two days..off/on with pain in my lower right side of my abdomen...Is this typical in crohn's?  I have a positive history of Inflammatory bowel for years..always thought i had Crohn's disease.

Any suggestions?  And how do they get it under control?

Hello,

Well, bleeding is certainly a symptom of both UC and Crohn's disease.  Apart from bleeding and pain, do you experience diarrhea, fevers, weight-loss, abnormal blood counts, nausea, or vomiting as well?  Have you had all the tests for Crohn's and UC - Upper GI with a SBFT, endoscopy, colonoscopy with biopsy, etc.?  I think a colonoscopy would be beneficial from a diagnostic point of view.  If your doctor determines the severity of your IBD, he will be able to treat it better.  Depending of whether you have Crohn's or UC, where it is located, and the severity of it will all play a part in the medications your doctor uses to treat it.  Usually, Asacol, Pentasa, Prednisone, and many others are commonly used.  If you haven't seen a GI specialist yet, I definitely recommend it.  Apart from IBD, other illnesses could be causing your symptoms, and it would be best to rule them out.

I hope you feel well soon.  Good luck and best wishes.  I hope this helps a bit.
