Unless the doctor's diagnosis is certain that the cause is one of the more minor complaints such as anal fissure or haemorrhoids, I suggest that you request a colonoscopy.
Rectal bleeding is never normal and should always be investigated. Type in rectal bleeding to google/yahoo etc and log on to one of the many sites. The Medicinenet site is particularly informative. With this information you will be better informed when you seek medical advice.
