Blood found durng Sigmoid test

by TIKO, Aug 13, 2003 12:00AM
My doctor performed a Sigmoid (not sure of the correct pronounciation) test on me this morning. He first asked my age, which is 44 years old, then after the test he said that I do
have Hemorroid's, which he gave me a presciption for, then he said that he saw blood as well. Then he said it that the blood could be a result of my hemorrroid's, but that he wanted to be safe, and scheduled me for a Colonoscopy. I am not experiencing any bleeding in my stool or anthing else out of the ordinary.  Should I be worried??? Could this be Cancer??? My test isn't sheduled until Aug. 29th...and I will be worried about it until then. Please help!!!

The most likely cause is hemorrhoids.  However, because you are approaching the age of 50, you cannot rule out cancer.  It is unlikely, but your doctor was wise in scheduling the colonoscopy just to be on the safe side.

Other potential causes includes inflammatory bowel disease, a polyp, an AV malformation or diverticulosis.  The colonoscopy would be the most comprehensive test to evaluate this.

Followup with your personal physician is essential.

What is AV malformation?

by GI.PA, Aug 14, 2003 12:00AM
An AV malformation is a prominant blood vessle really close to the lining of the colon.  It is benign in nature but can get irritated and bleed.
