Bowel issues and Thyroid question

by whittie918, Jan 07, 2009 07:31AM
I've been having increased motility with my bowels.  As a result they are sort on the thin size, about the same girth as my thumb (or 3/4 inch).  It seems on the softer side.  Morning caffeine seems to be the trigger and I could go 2/3 times a day.  I think pre thyroid issues I would go only once a day and girth was greater and more dense.  I have no pain and a take at home blood in stool test was negative after 5 consecutive days. I have no urgency to go unless I actually do have to go.

Im wondering if this could have anything at all to do with my recent thyroid removal and being kept slightly hyper with my medication.  I'm figuring if it increases my metabolism then BM's will spend less time in colon and therefore the end result I'm seeing.  I have tinkered with things at home to see if it makes a difference and increased fiber will increase girth to 1 inch but I still go 2 times a day minimum.  I can even witnessed an isolated incident of a more marble like constipated state that is not altered in shape.

For the record I am 38 years old. I do get a super complete physical each year but to date they have considered me too young for any colon testing.  I was considering asking for the virtual colon test next physical in a 3 months.

Elevated thyroid levels can result in a change in bowel function. Have you discussed this issue with your doc?

Thyroid hormone is a key 'get moving' element for all the cells of your body. Without it, you'd be sluggish, constipated, depressed, etc.

So check with your doc about your current levels of thyroid supplementation.
