Bowel problems after Hysterectomy

by Wannabebetter, Oct 27, 2009 01:06PM
I was wondering if any women out there are having bowels problems since their Hysterecotomy. I had mine in April of this year. About a month later it is like my bowels just stopped working. I have to drink Milk of Magnesia ever two days just to go. My body doesn't tell me I have to go anymore. Today I had to call in sick from work since the pain has gotten bad from being backed up. I get backed up sometimes to the point I can not eat. I have been seeing a Gastro doctor. I had a colonoscopy and he did not see anything. I also had a CT scan also. My next test to have done is the pill cam. He said something must be going on in the small intestine. I really hope they find something. It kind of ***** to go from one issue to another. I had the hysterectomy due to urinary frequency/urgency. Found out I had uterine prolapse. Had to remove my uterus and put a sling since after having two kids everything went south. I am too young to have these issues. I just want my life back so I can share it with my family and not think about this anymore. Anyone have the same issues?

Has a gyn suggested laporscopic surger to check of adhesions on your bowels?  I had a hysterectomy in 2006 and I think I'm about the same.  I can get constipated, but could get constipated prior to the surgery as well.  Has the GI doctor suggested daily miralax?  I had one suggest that to me due to rectal bleeding I think in 2007.  I'm not doing it, but have begun taking metamucil generic (original texture which works better for me) at times again.  My recent colonoscopy only showed hemorrhoids, I believe.  Are you gettng sufficient fiber in your diet?  I am confined to a soft diet, which makes this more of a challenge.

Thank you for your response. I have used Miralax before and it does not really work and also my body does not agree with a high fiber diet. It kind of makes my stomach worse. I don't know what is wrong. Tonight for dinner I had apple juice with two cap fulls of Miralax and about 10 prunes. I hope this works. I got a earlier appointment to see the Gastro doctor. I only have to wait until Nov 10th...aggghhhhh! I hope they can find out what is wrong with me using the pill cam.

It was suggested to me by a dietician to take probiotics and eat activia yogurt.  I am eating probiotic yogurt.  It doesn't give me diarrhea, but former elderly neighbors of mine said activia gave them diarrhea!  You might see it that would get you moving better.

There are different types of fiber- prunes has lots of it.   I know I've had a mess of cooked carrots help me move on more than one occasion.   I was seeing on a website how fiber can carry water out of the body and you should increase your water intake when you increase your intake of fiber to help prevent gas, abdominal discomfort and hard stools caused by dehydration.

I hope you can get some answers with the test!
