Budd-Chiari Syndrome

by Dolly, Jan 20, 2002 12:00AM
My husband has been tentatively diagnosed as having Budd-Chiari Syndrome or a blocked hepatic artery.  Does anyone know how this disease progresses or where I can find detailed info on it inc. prognosis/mortality, etc.?  The doctors have been vague and not optimistic.

I have not had a chance to thoroughly research this,(and don't know if I will have the time) but I typed "Budd-Chiari Syndrome" into the address bar of the google.com search engine. MANY websites appeared. The first one that I looked at was at:

http://cpmcnet.columbia.edu/dept/gi/BC.html

and had some possibly helpful information for you.

Then, I typed "Budd-Chiari Syndrome treatments" into the google.com search engine's address bar. Again, MANY websites came up. The first one that looked interesting was at:

http://www.chclibrary.org/micromed/00040940.html

and this article (by an MD) said that some of the causes of this condition are:

CERTAIN INFECTIONS
the "pill" (not, of course in your husband's case)
pregnancy & after pregnancy (also not in his case)
PHLEBITIS
ABDOMINAL INJURY
OTHER THINGS

This article says that sometimes surgery can help. Or, certain medications can sometimes help.

FIND A DOC WHO IS A REALLY GOOD LIVER EXPERT!

Also, perhaps CORRECTING THE UNDERLYING CAUSE(S) of this condition MIGHT BE HELPFUL, if you can figure out what his underlying causes were!

And, some very good acupuncturists might be able to help him.

I wish you both the best, and don't accept that "nothing can be done". THERE ARE ALWAYS THINGS THAT CAN BE DONE, TRIED, ETC.!!!

It seems like there are new techniques being developed to help patients with this syndrome!

I hope others will give you their thoughts too!

Sincerely, Concerned lady

The links concerned lady gave are good ones.
There is more information at the messageboard at
http://forums.delphiforums.com/liverfailure2/messages

If you go there, scroll down the column on the LEFT side of your screen, and click on the words "Budd Chiari Syndrome".

That will make a list of messages about Budd Chiari appear. Click on any that interest you.

PS- If you've never used a Delphi board before---

You can easily enter as a "guest" to read messages.

But in order to post any messages of your own, you have to make up a nickname and password. (It's all free.)

Hi, I'm patient with budd-chiari. I've known since 2000 and I was wondering if there is anyone who would like to talk about it. I would really like to talk to someone I can relate to. Thanks!

I was wondering how your husband is doing?  I was diagnosed with BCS last summer.
