Bug in the stomach?

by Stomachprob, Dec 30, 2008 08:07PM
I have had loose bowel movement - like as a gush of coffee with a lot of growling noises in my stomach - for the past three months. I had stool samples checked, and tested positive for cidificil and have been receiving treatment with flagyl. The first treatment was for 5days with Flagyl 500mg. It appeared like it was going away, then it came back. More stool cultures. I was put back on flagyl 500mg, this time for 1 week. Once again it appeared like it was getting better, then it came back. At its worst it was like torrents of coffee just gushing out. I was not dehydrated, however, and had no fever, and my apetite hadn't changed except for the bitter disgusting taste of flagyl that lingered. I had no stomach cramps or pains except for the growling noises in the stomach. I started treatment with flagyl 500mg for two weeks - the same thing again.  I was checked to see if it was a resistant strain of cidificil, but that came back negative. I am now on Flagyl 750mg for two weeks, and apart from the discomfort of the bitter taste, i appeared to be getting better, meaning there were no gushes of coffee-colored watery stool movements, but just two days away from the last dose of flagyl, the diarhoea has returned. Even though it is not severe, the noises in my stomach are more pronounced and go to the bathroom and let out the gush of water. It is beginning to annoy me, and the doctors cannot find anything wrong via stool culture. I am awaiting a specialists referral. What could i be suffering from?

Stomachprob, it's possible that the C. diff may not respond at all to the flagyl at this point in time, but your best bet is going to be working with an infectious disease specialist. Push to get that referral and get it as soon as possible. In the meantime, check out the cdiffsupport.org website. There are a lot of people there who have dealt with what you're currently going through and they may be able to offer a lot of good advice.
