Bulging Perineum after passing stool?

Bulging Perineum after passing stool?

After passing a particularly difficult stool, I still felt discomfort. After pressing on my perineum, I found it had several bulges. I tried to pass another stool to see if this was the issue, and was unable to do so. Is there anything I can do to ease the discomfort? Or is trying to pass it the only way? It's scary and uncomfortable, and I cannot settle because of it.

Hi Briarrose,
I am not a med pro and cannot diagnose you, but I can give you suggestions.
You could be experiencing hemorrhoids.
Its important to eat FIBER...no nuts, fried foods or starchy foods. If you need help in softening your stool, there are plenty of over-the-counter softeners. Please don't take laxatives...they are too harsh and will cause cramping. MiraLax has been good for me.  Also, do not strain to try and pass more BM. That is only putting more pressure down there and can cause the hems to become larger.  A nice warm bath tub soak can help with discomfort. Also, keep the area clean and, if possible, sleep "freely" at night. You could try and apply some A & D Ointment or good old vegetable shortening to help reduce "friction" and irritation, too.
If you still have problems after you have changed your diet to high fiber and used a stool softener, go to your doctor. There is no need to feel embarrassment...hemorrhoids are VERY common. The doc may prescribe an anal suppository that can help reduce swelling, pain and itching.
A little trick my OB/GYN taught me after the birth of my child...as you go to sit down...tighten up your butt cheeks. Don't relax until you are seated. This helps prevent the butt from "spreading" as you sit down. I know, sounds funny...but it will help.
I cannot express strongly enough of keeping your stools soft...FIBER FIBER FIBER
Constipation is the leading cause of hemorrhoids!!
Good luck in finding comfort!!!

Make sure the next time you see your OB/Gyn that you have the perineal area evaluated. It could suggest the early start of a rectocele or pelvic floor dysfunction, and PT work and some pelvic floor expercises may help to bypass more problems that could crop up in the future.
