Burning in upper stomach and chest

by Patricia__0__0, Sep 09, 1998 12:00AM

  Hi,
New problems have arisen... I have CAD and have had angioplasty. I also have had years of GERD and now have Barretts Esophagus. For the last few weeks I get this bad burning in my upper stomach and chest. Exertion DOES NOT aggravate it. It's worse soon after eating and it hurts into my back. I take 20 ml. of Prilosec twice daily. This is a new symptom for me... is this a symptom of Barretts?
  Thank you so much.
  Patricia

Dear Patricia,
Based on your letter, I assume that you have biopsy proven barrett's esophagus.  I suppose that your pain could be a symptom of the barrett's but one should also exclude gastric inflammation and uncomplicated acid or bile reflux.  If not done recently, you should have an upper endoscopy, esophageal motility study and 24 hr pH probe test.
