C diff

My wife recently had diarrhea for almost 3 weeks.  Her Gastrologist recommended a colonoscopy.  The colonoscopy came back negative without even any polyps, but as a result her diarrhea has stopped.    In fact, she is even a little bit constipated now (a week later).   Today we were told that a stool sample taken before the colonoscopy was positive for C diff.    Is it possible that the prep for the colonoscopy got rid of enough "bad" bacteria like C diff to have resolved the problem?

I'm sorry to hear she won't take care of herself. That's a very frustrating situation. Maybe with your love and heath that will change a bit and hopefully ease some of your worry.

Good luck John, and take care.

Thanks for the information.  The Gastrologist did not seem too concerned about the C Diff.  He ordered an ultra Sound and Hida scan, neither of which showed any problems.   And, guess what, the diarrhea stopped and my wife seems fine now.   It's frustrating to endure the weeks of misery with no apparent solution other than it stopped of its own accord.

As for the probiotics, I can get my wife to eat activated yogart, but she is like most men when it comes to her health.   She won't exercise (never has), and she still smokes cigarettes despite all of the warnings and the stroke that she suffered back in 06.   I've given up, the heated discussions we've had didn't do any good except raise her's and my respective blood pressures.   All I can do is love her and take care of her the best way I know how, and the way she will let me.

John, if you read the last post by jerry, please read the discussion that 'continues' on another thread: http://www.medhelp.org/posts/show/468834

It's possible that at some point jerry may be right, but until there's REAL proof of the statements, please follow the suggestions of your doc when it concerns the use of antibiotics. In addition, please make sure your wife is also considering the use of probiotics. It can be an important addition to help return her condition around and help restore the natural balance to her GI flora.

No, the problem is not resolved. She needs to talk to the doc and make sure she's put on a course of antibiotics specific for treating C. diff. Make sure they discuss the subject thoroughly as C. diff can be difficult to resolve.
