CMV Virus and Enlarged Spleen

by Colen__0__0, Feb 23, 1999 12:00AM

My friend recently had two liver transplants (within 4 days of each other) and she has been plagued with multiple bouts of rejection and CMV Virus.  Also, her liver is very enlarged.  Could there be a connection?  Is there some way to do a Spleen Biopsy to find out what is going on.

Dear Colleen,
One role for the spleen is to fightinfection.  Therefore, it is expected that the spleen will be enlarged during CMV infection.
The spleen can not be biopsied.  It is a very vascular organ that bleeds uncontrollably after it has been cut.
