Can anyone help going in for upper gi with small bowel series
I have been having severe nausea since December ever since I had gotten a stomach bug. Last week I had an endoscopy done which showed up fine. Now I am scheduled for an upper gi with small bowel series. I was just wondering if any of this is going to cause me nausea. I had a cat scan done recently and it made me very sick to my stomach to the point of dry heaving and dont want that to happen with this test coming up. So if anyone can tell me a little more about how I will feel from this test I would greatly appreciate it.
If the contrast made you sick with the CT scan, it's likely to be a problem again. Before you go in, talk to the radiology department to see if they can use a different contrast solution than you had for the CT scan. You also might want to ask your doctor for a nausea medication like phenergan to have on hand
, but the small bowel follow-through is VERY boring. About every 15 or 20 minutes the radiologist will take pictures and document its travels. It can take over 4 hours if you're a naturally slow-mover, or even longer if you have a partial
at the cecum (the beginning of the large bowel). You may be asked to walk the halls a bit if that happens.
Since it can take quite a while to follow the contrast through your bowels, bring along a book or something else to read - anything to keep yourself occupied. I hope they find something that can be easily treated. I know the awful feeling of having one test after another only to be told they're all normal. Best of luck to you. :-)
