Can ulcertive colitis be inherited

by Joe-Wildberg, Aug 14, 1998 12:00AM

Hi- I was wonder if ulcerative colitis be inherited from parent to child???   (Father to child)
Dear Joe,
Inheritance seems to play a role in about 20 percent of patients with ulcerative colitis. In most families with relatives who have inflammatory bowel disease (ulcerative colitis or Crohn's disease), the relatives are affected by the same type of inflammatory bowel disease. Twin studies have also shown that if one identical twin has ulcerative colitis the second twin is more likely to have it as well. Furthermore, there is an increase prevalence (5-10%) of inflammatory bowel disease among the first degree relatives (parent or sibling) of affected patients. The incidence of ulcerative colitis is also increased in certain populations (for example, Ashkenazi Jews). I hope you find this information helpful.
