Chest pains, male, 45 years of age, lower left side under ribs for 2 years

On and off, and for the last two months almost constantly, under my lowest ribs on the left side of my body, I am gettings pains, sometimes so severe that it feels as if someone kicked me there.  Oftentimes if I bend to far one way or another it immediately pains hard and I almost cannot move.  This condition has been on and off during the past two years.  No shortness of breath, but the pain makes me not want to breath.  In looking at anatomy charts I believe it could be spleen of left kidney.  No problems urinating ever.  Just a deep pain that feels as if I have been kicked and it comes and goes with the exception of this past two months where it has remained daily... not overpowering though, only at times.  Any ideas?

GI causes in that area can include the pancreas as well as GERD, an ulcer, or inflammation of the upper digestive tract.  You can consider blood tests looking at the pancreatic enzymes, as well as an upper GI series or upper endoscopy to look at the upper GI tract.

If the kidneys are of concern, you can consider an ultrasound for evaluation.

Other possible causes can include the heart (which can be evaluated via a stress test) as well as musculoskeletal-based pain.

These options can be discussed with your personal physician.

Followup with your personal physician is essential.

I have been having extreme pain under the bottom of the left rib.  It only comes on when I bend certain ways, and it really hurts then.  When I stand up straight, it quits hurting.  Sounds like your problem.  My internist says it is muscle cramps.  I did not see how this could be, but it may be.  My pain comes on when I bend over to the left to tie my shoes, wash my left foot in the tub.  It is the bending that starts the pain.

Me again.  Have you been able to find out what is causing the pain under your left rib?   If so,  please write a note back here for me to read.  Thanks
