Chronic Pancreatitis and ERCP

by TazLady, Mar 06, 2002 12:00AM
Hi,
I have been diagnosed with Severe Chronic Pancreatitis with Sphincter of Oddi Dysfunction and will be having another ERCP in 1 week. The doctor will be cutting my pancreatic duct, bile duct and oddi sphincter. The doctor says he will not use dye this time to help me not have such a bad pancreatic attack after the surgery.  Has anyone else out there had an ERCP and not had a pancreatic attack afterward?  Or, if you did, how bad was it and how long did you have to stay in the hospital?  My doctor says he is pretty sure I will have one and should plan on being in the hospital for up to 2 weeks.  He is hoping that not using the dye during the ERCP will make the attack a less severe one.  I am anxious to hear from anyone out there regarding this subject.
Thanks,
TazLady

Yes, I had a ERCP this past Sept. and I did not have any pancreatic problem after. He did use dye but avoided the pancreatic duct since my sister had a ERCP with induced pacreatitis. My problem is dilated ducts which they still feel there is obstruction but they cannot find. So, good-luck ...it should go better since the dye is what burns the pancreas. I will keep you in my thoughts.

I had an ERCP WITH dye and did not have any pancreatitis afterward, although supposedly my pancreas was fine going into the procedure. I felt a little queasy right after it - not sure whether it was from the dye or the knock-out drugs, but I basically walked out of the hospital within an hour.
Good luck to you.

Hey! I have the same problem, although I didn't know it was possibly due to a dye! I'll have to ask my doc the next time I see her.
I'm not here to scare you, but you asked also for any who've had attacks following ERCPs and how long. I've had numerous ERCPs and have had attacks following each one. They know now, to draw the blood while I'm in recovery before they wake me to check it to see what it's doing. And each time, I've been admitted to the hospital for around 4 days.
So, there's a good chance that you won't have an attack afterward, but there's a small chance you will.
Please post after your procedure to tell us how it went, or email me. I'm anxious to see how one does when dye isn't used.

Hi All,
Thanks for posting and answering my question.  The last ERCP I had that the dr. used dye in, ended me up in the hospital for 9 days.  And at that one, the dr. didn't go anywhere near my pancreatic duct.  This time he is.  I am scared to death.  The dr. says there is a 70% chance I WILL have an attack after the surgery.  But if it's only for 4 days, I can handle that.  Just don't think I can handle the 2 weeks in the hospital he told me to prepare for.
Thanks all.  And if anyone else wants to add anything to this, I am MORE than willing to read it it.
Thank you,
TazLady
