Chronic Stomach Pain and Nausea

Chronic Stomach Pain and Nausea

My father has been suffering from chronic stomach pains and nausea, since November. Each doctor has given a different diagnosis. He is currently on Plavix, Prilosec, Vastarel, Isordil, Fursemide, Simvor. There are side effects of these medications that include stomach pain, but I think it's way too extreme. The last test he had was a barium swallow and all that was found was a lot of bubbles (gas).

I am not sure if he has a heart disease or GI problems. He has been suffering from severe stomach pains and nausea on a daily basis. He use to drink and smoke in the past, but has stopped. He eats normally, unless he's in pain. Any advice or assistance will be appreciated. Thanks!!

I am feeling so frustrated because I can't seem to get the proper help for him, since he is in pain every single day.

Hi there:

I'm sorry to hear that your Dad is suffering.  I'm not a doctor but I've noticed that sometimes the simplest things are overlooked.  Often a low-fat, high-fiber, high-carb diet can really make a difference.  Does he keep a diary?  If not, a list of anything that goes into or comes out of his body should be noted along with how he feels.  You might find that he is allergic to green beans or something simple that is causing his symptoms.  Gas can be extremely painful!  Hopefully, if he had gallstones or serious GI problems, one of the tests he's had would have noted that.  If not, there is a test called an Endoscopic Ultrasound that is done under twilight sedation, which can really pinpoint any major problems including Sphincter of Oddi Dysfunction and pancreatitis.  If my Dad were suffering, that is the test that I would request for him.

Good luck and God bless you both.

Thanks for the advice. I have been keeping a diary and have changed his diet, but there
has been no change and very little relief. I am trying to get him to a GI specialist and would also look into what you have advised. Thanks for taking the time to respond.

Hi there:

It's been a month since your post.  How is your Dad doing?  Have you seen any improvement in his symptoms?  Have the doctors come together on a diagnosis(es)?  How is he coping with all of that medication?  Hopefully they've eliminated heart problems as the cause.

I can only imagine how anxious you've been.  It's wonderful that you are such a kind, caring and compassionate daughter.

God bless, Godspeed and all the best,

Sam
