Colectomy for severe diverticulosis

Colectomy for severe diverticulosis

Two years ago I has told I had severe diverticulosis discovered during a colonoscopy. I have had progressively severe symptoms-pain and horrible gas and now finally unable to have a BM on my own-am using Mag oxide and herbal stimulants and the results are less than satisfactory. I tried very hard to do the high fiber diet-I became and expert on fiber-soluble and insoluble-everyday I kept a list of the fiber I consumed. It helped for awhile and then didn't help at all. I also added psyllium. I was probably consuming 30 grams of fiber a day and haviong alot of pain and gas with that. That's probably been up until 6 months ago. Now I can hardly eat anything. As the day progresses I have more and more pain. I've had four cat scans in a year, a barium enema, three trips to the ER for pain-which of course pain med just seems to make it worse. I am not sleeping at night. I don't go anywhere anymore since I'm pretty miserable most of the time. I see my GI specialist this afternoon and will ask for another colonoscopy. I'm thinking my colon is pretty trashed and perhaps the luimen has narrowed not letting stuff get through. I'm thinking its time to have my colon removed even though I have never had documented evidence of diverticulitis. To continue living this way is a nightmare. I would appreciate an opinion. Thanks
