Colon/Intestinal Spasm

Last year I had blood and mucus in my stool along with very painful  bowel movements.  I had an incomplete colonoscopy and the doctor told me to have a barium enema.  The symptoms had subsided but I had a pain in my abdomen so I had it done.  Looking back I believe the pain was a pulled muscle.  The test came back clear, but I never found out the cause exactly.  Perhaps a spasm.  Point being, the symptoms have started with the blood and mucus.  What causes spasms and how can I avoid and treat?
