Constant Nausea

by mrsnned, May 22, 2008 07:45AM
Hi I am new to this site and hope it will help with my questions.  I have nausea almost all the time.  I also have pain and discomfort in my upper right side.  I have acid reflux, (GERD) and have had my gallbladder removed, about 5 years ago.  The nausea is so bad that I hate to go anywhere.  The nausea is usually accomplied by headaches, or vice-versa.  If I take a promethozine, darvocet, and lay down for about 30 minutes or so, it eases up.  Could you PLEASE tell me anything that may be causing this?  I eat pretty healthy.  Thanks so much for any help.

Sincerely,
mrsnned

After gallbladder is removed, bile constantly flows into duodenum, even when is no food there. In this situation, accompanied with gastric reflux, BILE REFLUX may also occur. Bile leaks up into the stomach and causes nausea.

But first thing, you should do, is breath test for Helycobacter pylori, which is by far the commonest cause of gastritis and GERD with nausea. If positive, treatment is with antibiotics.

Thanks!  I have had H-Pylori in the past.  I however, have never heard of Bile Reflux.  I will do somwe research on it.  I had back surgery last Aug. and the Dec. before, and still have a lot of pain.  I was thinking that the pain may be causing the nausea.  I know I have to go see a doctor for this, it's just that I am so tired of going to doctor after doctor, for other medical problems.  Thanks so much for your help!

1. What was exact reason for gallbladder removal? Your problems may still arise from bile ducts - you said you feel pain in upper right area. This pain + nausea speak for the problem with bile ducts, like "sphincter of Oddi dysfunction" or "biliary diskinesia". This could both go with bile reflux and nausea. It is HIDA scan, which may show problems with bile duct function.

I'm trying to help you to locate the source of pain + nausea. I think, it may be either (or both) of these:
1. Stomach: gastritis, possibly caused by H. pylori.
2. Bile ducts: sphincter of Oddi dysfunction, or biliary dyskinesia.

Good morning!  They removed my gallbladder because I was in pain in the same area along with the nausea.  I had an ultra-sound, or something like it done and they were able to see what they thought was one stone.  The surgery was done and the doc siad the sac was full of stones.  I have had several enodscopic procedures done since and he says they all look good.  It has been about 3 years since I've had any test done.  Is there anything else I can do for the nausea?  It starts as soon as I get up in the morning and strikes all through the day.  Thanks again!

Can the H-Pylori return?

by boron, May 24, 2008 10:07AM
Possible causes of nausea:

ACID:
You're not saying if you are taking some anti-acid drugs. If not, you should. And if you do, you may got resistant to them and need to change them.

H. PYLORI:
Yes, H. pylori can return. If you'll have anotherr test, have a breath test for H. pylori, since blood test may show antibodies from the last infection.

BILE:
Bile reflux may cause nausea. There is a drug cholestiramine, which binds excessive bile in the intestine. This drug works great for some, but others can't take it for its side effects. There are also some fibers which can bind some bile, you can try with ground flax-seeds, colloidal bentonite, or psyllium husk. You can search for "soluble fibers" for more info.

If nothing helps, the next step is to have tests for biliary dyskinesia and sphincter of Oddi dysfunction.
