Constant bloating and burping -- please help

by lowe's, Feb 24, 2002 12:00AM
Since a year ago, I have been frequently experiencing bloating and burping problems. I seem to be somehow "eating" air, which has to be expelled by the stomach every few minutes. This type of constant burping (both loud and quiet) occurs throughout the day. Sometimes I also feel bloated (the sensation of being very full yet hungry at the same time), which makes the burping problem even worse.

My hypothesis is that something is wrong with the valve that directs my esophagus passage to my stomach and lungs. When I breathe, the valve does not completely seal the stomach-passage, which allows air to be forced into my stomach.

Sidenote: The problem does not occur when I am concentrating (i.e. doing work)

Any help is appreciated!

I would be kind of interested to know more about this myself as I have a similar problem.  On occasion I will wake up in the morning and as soon as I sit up I can feel the fullness in my stomach and will belch (most often it isn't forceful, but just like a gentle release of air) for several minutes after getting up.  I have been only mildly concerned, but will be doing some research!  If I find anything out - I will post back.

Do you have any associated heartburn?
My symptoms were similar but I had very severe heartburn which warranted a fundoplication surgery.  Surgery has been very successful in eliminating the problems, but perhaps you can explore solutions with a Gastro doctor.
My doc said 'air-swallowing' is a common problem with some people and made it sound like there were medicines to help.
Let me know if you have heartburn associated with the symptoms because I can offer several suggestions if that's the case.

No, I don't have chronic heartburn. However, I do believe that my problem may be related my lower esophageal sphincter (LES).

Thanks for the help.
