Constipation?

by guferuss, Jun 30, 2009 05:17PM
About two weeks ago I had what I thought was a bad case of constipation. Stool softeners and enema did not work. After a week or so I developed pain in my lower right abdomen. I saw my MD and he sent me for a CT of abdomen, came back normal. Later that day I had a complete 180 of my condition, which lasted for a few days.

Today it seems as if I'm back at square one. I have the frequent urge to go, but when I try it feels as if something is preventing me from passing stool. I am only able to pass a small amount at a time. Am I constipated again due to all the "binding" food I ate trying to get rid of the diarrhea that came after all the fiber I ate trying to relieve my constipation? Or is there something going on in my colon? Wouldn't it have shown up on my CT scan?

Yes, you're constipated again.  To relieve constipation, there are the basic three that you should be doing:  Drink plenty of water, exercise, and eat fiber FOODS (not supplements) like whole wheat bread and dark green salad.  Sounds simple, but if you do this stuff daily, and if you have just ordinary constipation, you should get regular again.  And yes, the scan would have shown stool sitting in the bowels, but this is considered normal unless the whole bowel if full or if it's making the bowels expand.

If right this minute you've got the urge to go but it won't come out, you can get some "Baby Lax" at the drugstore, a little box of tubes of ointment, squirt two tubes in there, and a bunch will come out in minutes.  Then your regimen of the three items I said should get everything else out with relative ease... you can use plain KY jelly to make the rest come out easier.  And this time just ignore the diarrhea that follows, that's normal after constipation, no need to "fix" it.  The regular waste will push it out, and then you'll do fine.
