Could H Pylori have caused all this?

by pixielady, May 01, 2006 12:00AM
Hello, I live in a tiny town in UK and I hope you can help me with this awful problem.Just before last Xmas I became ill for the first time in my life (I am 57) but always healthy until now.
It all started with a red sore eye and a massive floater appeared/sore throat which felt like food was sticking between my pharynx and nose when I ate. The eye worsened and swelled up had severe pain down side of nose and developed loss of appetite, diarreah and nausea with a lot of burping.Night sweats when I lay on my sides at night.
After waiting 3 weeks I finally saw the opthamologist who said I had dry eye syndrome and I would get used to the floater in time.He said there was inflammation and gave predisnole drops which made the swelling go down and the eye less red but the pain continued down my nose side as did the diarreah.
My Doctor suggested sinus trouble and gave me a weeks course of very strong antibiotics but the pain continued and a large vein appeared down my nose.I also noticed that I could no longer flare my right nostril and got headaches at the front.
My diarreah worsened and I started to get a pulsating mass in my ribcage whenever I lied down. All my other symptoms continued and my weight dropped from 9stone to 8stone.I also noticed whenever I ate about 15mins later my vision blurred in the right eye I sweated and all my veins in my arms swelled up.Night sweats worsened and if I lay on my sides felt like on a fairground ride and my arms went dead.
I paid £850 to see a gastroenterologist who did an endoscope downwards and found exudating gastritis in the antrum which he put down to h pylori. I was given triple therapy with a two month follow through with denoltab which I have almost finished. This was in early March. It is now May and I have lost another stone.I had a scan of upper abdomen and barium x ray but all clear.I also paid another £180 to see an E.N.T. specialist who said I had slight inflammation in nose gave steroid drops and am waiting to see another opthamologist again paying as such a long waiting list.
I have all my original symptoms and feel as if everything I eat sets in my stomach then comes straight out next morning. My upper stomach sounds as though there is a burst water pipe and I have a swelling in my lower right quadrant which eases after I have passed these motions it feels as though my colon has gone hard.
Last time I saw the gastroenterologist he said I was a crazy woman with irritable bowel and laughed said I was fit and well despite being 5ft 7 and only 7 stone!!He and my own G.P. have both come to the conclusion that it is some stress thing and I am making it up but prior to this I never saw a Doctor for 15 yrs, even through the menopause.
I have my own business which I am having to sell as too weak to work,I can't sleep for the night sweats, but have learned to stop them by lying on my back with feet raised which has given me a bed sore being so thin, I have no life please help!!!

The upper endoscopy is a pretty comprehensive test of the upper digestive tract.  If H Pylori is causing the problems, you can consider being re-tested to ensure that the triple therapy has eridicated the bacteria.  It is possible that the bacteria may be resistant to the antibiotics.

Further tests to evaluate the upper digestive tract would be a 24-hr pH study to evaluate for GERD, as well as esophageal motility studies.  A gastric emptying scan can also be considered to look for gastroparesis - which may contribute to your symptoms.

These options can be discussed with your personal physician or gastroenterologist.

Followup with your personal physician is essential.

Thankyou I was also wondering about the possibility of hypochlorhydria or low stomach acid as I heard h pylori could become active in this condition so if anyone knows anything about this please let me know.

If you are taking medicatoon such as Prev Pac ,it would alter the flora in your digestive system.

Hi Yoshi, I took the prev pac for 7 days but have been on the denoltab which are a bismuth compound for about six weeks. I went to the health food shop last week and have been taking pro biotic capsules since then to try and balance my gut flora. The strange thing is I never even had indigestion in my life until I got this h pylori never so much as a burp!! Thanks for your reply

Prev pak is for 14 days, not 7 days.
I dont think the problem with your nose and eye and veins swelling when you eat have to do with h paylori bacteria, down where I am in the south,my doctor is Mexican and he said H Pylori infection is common among his Mexican patients, some have very high counts when they took the blood tests(now I understand there is a breath test which is more accurate and faster than the blood test and it can be done in doctor office),but they dont have your symptoms with eye ,nose and vein swelling up.
Have you looked into the possibility of not enough stomach acid, given your age and the medication you are taking.
Yes,stomach acid does kill germs and bacteria, when I was taking nexium/prevacid daily,I have to clear my phlegm which I never have before.
In fact there is talk about doing a study on how these nexium, zantac etc of the world could cause lung infection due to low stomach acid.

Hi Yoshi,Thanks for your reply I am in a state as I ran out of cortisone eye drops and my eye has closed up I look like I have a permanent frown and still have all my other symptoms. I did another query above this meant it to go on the optic page but came out here. Someone suggested mixed connective tissue disease which is what I suspect myself. I don't deserve to be left like this without someone looking at my symptoms properly. I have been forced to sell my business and cannot go on not sleeping or eating now hardly being able to see.
