Could severe nervousness/vomitting be cause of current problem

by Susie__0__0, Jun 24, 1998 12:00AM

i am 27, have 2 children, and had a partial hysterectomy at age 22 due to trama from child birth of large children. my entire life ( since age 2 i have been told) i ahve been excessively nervous. and my nervous reaction to everything has always been vomitting and instantaneous diarrhea. i was taken to a doctor once and a small child and told my parents i was doing it out of spite to them. it has continued into adulthood and i have no control over it, i can want to do something but out of no where a panic attack sets in and i become phisically ill. for almost three months now it has suddenly without reason stopped. however, for quite a while now i have been having serious problems with pains in my abdomin (abdomen). it is below my navel of to the right side most often and occasionally to the left side. i have irregular bowel movements that are very soft with no form and very painful cramping as if i were constipated. i have severe bloating and a constant feeling of being full, like i have over eaten, although i havent
eaten at all. all blood work comes out normal and gbus and upper gi are negative for problems. they think maybe i have chrohns disease. it is possible that all of the vomitting and diarrhea have damaged my stomache and intestines and could be the cause of this? also as a child i had giardia lamblia twice, could that have done something? confussed and frustrated, thank you for your time.

Dear susie,
It is certainly possible that all your symptoms are related to nerves and anxiety.  However, before we draw this conclusion, it is necessary to exclude several causes of your symptoms.  Giardia lamblia can cause both upper abdominal symptoms ( nausea, burning in the pit of the stomach) as well as diarrhea.  It is unlikely that your childhhod infection is cuasing your current symptoms.  X-rays of the small intestine should exclude Crohn's disease from the list of possible causes of your symptoms.  I always exclude gastroparesis in peiople who have recurrent vomiting and abdominal pains.  I am suprised at the number of times this diagnosis has been missed by other physicians.  Finally, you should consider the possibility that your symptoms reprent irritable bowel disease.  If no pathology is found after your evaluation, symptomatic treatment should be considered.
This response is offered for your general information and should not replace the conclusions drawn from a careful and complete evaluation by your physician.
If you want, we would be happy to see you in the Division of Gastroenterology at Henry Ford Hospital and perform the appropriate investigations after we have had the chance to meet you and to review your history in greater detail. You can arrange an appointment with Dr. Fogel, one of our experts in the diagnosis and treatment of gastrointestinal problems by calling the Henry Ford Physician Referral Line at (800)653-6568.
