Crohns with partial colon removal and numerous stools per day...meds = no luck

by Chris__0__0, Jan 11, 1999 12:00AM

Approximately one year ago I had about 2 feet taken out of my lower intestine.  From what I understand it is the section that would absorb bile and b12 along with a few other things
I had very frequent stools (watery) in the first few months which I was told was normal and my body would adjust.  It has been consistantly becoming worse.  I have been on lopramide, cholestra and a few other things along with all the normal over the counter type meds that were suggested.  Nothing seems to help. At the most it would delay it sometimes but then once I did go it was like a cork was released and I would go continously for some time.
From my last test I apparently am extrememly malnurished because of my body not absorbing the proper nutrients, etc.
Unfortunately I do not have insurance so at this time and the last 9months or so I havn't been seen by a doctor.
Judging from the last colonosopy I had before the surgury they did take out was ALL of the crohns that was "active" or noticeable.
prior to that I had been taking prednisone for approximately 10 years.
I was on the sulfa meds but from headaches, etc I was taken off of that and simply remained on the prednisone.
I mention the prednisone in case that may have a factor in this.  I assume the doctors would have said something but just wanted to cover all my bases
My stools are approximately 5-20 x's per day.. I try to stay away from foods that do bother me but it seems like it doesn;t make much of a difference on what I eat.  The worst seems to be orange juice of all foods.. I would have stools anyplace from a hour or a little more after I eat then..I am in the bathroom quite consistantly for the following few hours until I eat again and it starts all over again.
I havn't been working for some time becasue of this reason.. on an average 8 hour day I would be in the bathroom for 1.5 to 2 hours.
I am at my ends as far as money goes with family helping, etc.
I need to work for funds but almost impossible it seems with the frequent bathroom visits.
The only way I seem to be able to control anything is by not eating.  I sometimes don't eat for an entire day if I know I will be doing something or know b-rooms won't be intirely accessible.
  also....
recently if I do go to the bathroom and there is a LOT of stool there is blood when I wipe.. this only seems to happen when I go for a long time (have a lot of stool).. I don't know if that would clue you into anything so thought I'd just mention it.
Any suggestions you may have would be greatly appreciated
btw... I'm a 27 year old male.. diagnosed with crohns at age of 15. first and only surgury was a year and 3 moths ago.. because of the narrowing of that section.
Thank you for your time and any suggestions regarding any of this
  Thank you
  Chris

Dear chris,
Based on the information that you provided, you need to see a doctor for investigation and treatment.  There are several possibilities that require evaluation.  Your persistent diarrhea and weight loss reflect recurrence of Crohn's disease.  If this is the explanation, then medical therapy is indicated.  Alternatively, your diarrhea and weight loss reflect malabsorption related to the bowel resection.  Loss of bile acids can cause a watery diarrhea due to colon resection.  Therapy with cholestyramine, a bile acid binding resin often provides symptomatic improvement.
Given that you have been symptomatic for many months, it is unlikely that you will have spontaneous resolution of symptoms.  the only way to regain control of daily activities is to treat your medical problems and this requires professional expertise.  I suggest that you contact your local hospital, state medical society or nearest medical school to find resources for your care.
This information is presented for educational purposes only.  Ask specific questiosn to your personal physician.
