Delayed reaction to alcohol, other depressants and prednisone

by mz, May 29, 2002 12:00AM
I am 36 yrs. old an in good physical condition. About 1 1/2 yrs. ago I developed a condition where approximately 24 hours after drinking alcohol I get an intense esophageal pain and vomiting w/o nausea for about 12 hrs. It also happened 3 times after surgical procedures (I'm guessing from the anesthesia) and also when I was on prednisone. I've been to 3 gasto docs and they are all stumped. My next move is to see a neurologist. My only other symtom is dysphagia that comes and goes and lingers after attacks. I have had 2 endoscopies and have been checked for delayed gastric emptying and gall bladder function...all negative, as were batteries of blood and urine tests. The attacks are severe. Anyone have a clue? Thx.

I am wondering if it has anything to do with your pancreas.  Sometimes you can become alcohol intolerant and the pancreas can cause the pain you are describing along with the vomiting.  I know I am unable to drink.  I have Sphincter of Oddi Dysfunction and even some medications can cause that pain.  I hope you find a solution to your situation.  Let us know how you are feeling.  Good Luck!
