Desparate for some resolution to problem!

by cccrys, Oct 22, 2006 12:00AM
Hi, Please help me with these confusing uncomfortable symptoms that have been reoccuring every 3-4 days for the last 3 months after a  big move to a new state.  I'm 34yo female, 145lbs. and I start on this "pattern" every few days that starts with a normal bm, followed by another one, and another, until it evenutally gets to a mucus blob with red blood streaks in the mucus.  No blood on or in the stool.  Sometimes all I pass is this slightly bloody mucus (about a teaspoon).  I have this achy pain in my rectum that flares up during all of this and it makes me feel generally ill all day(no fever).  Anyway, it doesn't seem to be related to anything that I eat.  It just seems to happen spontaneously.  In the past two months, I have seen 3 dr.s had 2 colonoscopies, blood work, stool cultures for parasites, checked for H.pylori and cdiff and the FOBT cards.  All of these are negative for anything!!  Don't know what to do.  I thought that if it was hemmrhoids that the doc would've seen on the scope.  I treated myself with a hemmrhoid suppository anyway just to see if it would help and it made my rectum ache again really bad.  GI doc said probably IBS so I'm on metamucil and antispasmodic.  This has not seemed to help much.  I'm not so sure about IBS with the blood involved.  Can you help?  I so want to get something to help with these symptoms.
Thanks!

You have had a pretty comprehensive evaluation, including 2 colonoscopies.  Possible causes would include irritable bowel syndrome.  Hemorrhoids would have been seen on the colonoscopy.

I would discuss treatments for IBS.  This can include antispasmodic agents or increasing fiber in the diet.  Recently the antibiotic Rifaximin has been shown to help with IBS.

Testing the stool for fat malabsorption as well as breath tests for lactose intolerance can be considered.

These options can be discussed with your personal physician.

Followup with your personal physician is essential.

Is the blood red or a darker color? If it's darker then "blood" red, it might be coming from you small intestine, and you should have a small bowel x-ray or a camera pill.
