Diarrhea and Fatigue

by Troy__0, Nov 04, 1998 12:00AM

I have had Diarrea (diarrhea), Fatigue, and I lose feeling in spots in my left leg
the feeling returns with "pins and needles" sensation. The diarrea (diarrhea) had mucus and is always there
but the fatigue is intermitant but really bad. I also have lower back pain. I don't know what is wrong with me and my doctor can't
find anything wrong. I've had blood tests (General lab work, STD, ect) and they can't find anything.
can you give me any advise? or do you have an idea on what it could be or what to ask my doctor to look for?
I am 27yrs old, and have had these problems for about 2 years.
  Thank you
  Troy
Dear Troy,
Chronic diarrhea, especially with large volume, frequent, watery stools, can lead to fluid, electrolyte and mineral deficiency. These can cause fatigue and muscle aches and cramping. Common electrolyte deficiencies include hyponatremia (low sodium), hypokalemia (low potassium) and hypomagnesemia (low magnesium). Zinc deficiency can also occur. Since you have had these symptoms for the past 2 years, I would recommend that you have a gastroenterological evaluation to rule out a number of gastrointestinal disorders such as inflammatory bowel disease or celiac sprue. I hope you find this information helpful.
