Difficult swallowing, belching, food getting caught

Food has been getting stuck in my esophagus for over 15 yrs.  Sometimes it eventually goes down, other times I have to make it come up because I begin to burp, signalling it's NOT going down.  This happens with bread, rice, meat, and just about anything that's not small and very moist.  At times, I willl have no trouble with the same foods.  My belching is becoming much more frequent.  My father had espohageal cancer at about age 80.  What are some of the things this could be and how can I ease the symptoms?
