Diverticulitis

I have had several spells of diverticulitis since spring. The last spell put me in the e.r. because the pains were so severe. I had a colonoscopy and the gastroenterologist suggested I might have food allergies. He said if I have two more spells of severe pain I should see about getting part of my colon removed. Would getting part of my colon removed help if it is food allergies instead of diverticulitis? I can eat food from my house (nothing processed) and not have a problem, but as soon as I go to a restaurant I have severe pain for days in my lower left colon.

dont go getting your colon cut out for nothing!,,,woatch what you get, greasy resteraunt food is causing it,,greas,,and that could be gullbladder,,,i doubt its diverticulitis, even if the doc says so,,,could be colitis,,either way,you need to watch what you eat,and if that means only food from home, then so be it!

I was just posting about a recent colonoscopy, but as I read further down I saw your post.  It really helped me.  I have Diverticulosis, and my doctor told me that it is a fallacy about staying away from nuts and seeds also.  He said you can eat anything but Staples.
My colonoscopy turned out great, but he thinks its my Diverticulosis or allergies that cause my cramping.  I will try to follow some of your ideas, and hope it helps me.

Hi, I have suffered from many episodes of diverticulitis which is an infection in your intestine. It will make you very sick and must be treated with antibiotics. It is caused from stool being trapped in pockets in your colon. You should rest your colon (soft , low fiber diet) for several days. When your infection is gone, you need a high fiber diet and plenty of water. It's the bulk that keeps your colon clean.
My doctor also has me on a heavy dose of probiotics (good live bacterea). An over the counter one is Jarro-Dophilus (capsules.. My doctor specialises in colon disease and says that the only type of seed or nut to avoid is popcorn (she says wives tale). Also, little or no beef, and not to much wheat as it is bad for you in other ways. Other whole grains are much better for you. She highly recommends Flax seed. The best form of fiber suppliment is psyllium which you can get in capsules and in bulk. Avoid "bad fat" foods (cheese & fried foods etc.) I think the basis of the lactose thing is that there is a lot of animal fat in a lot of dairy foods. I have done really great since I have been on this regime.

Hope this helps, and good luck to you.

hi, to help and improve your condition, you need to keep away from seeds, nuts and spicey foods. taking one omega 3 fish oil capsules 3 times a day can drammatically heal your diverticulitis, also you should cut down on your sugar and dairy intake for a few weeks, one possible test you should consider is a lactose intolerance test, because some people with diverticulitis also are found to have an allergy with dairy. good luck.
