Do cortisone suppositories help with hemorrhoids or fissures?

by jackie1234, Jul 13, 2007 06:04PM
I'm a 32 year old generally healthy female and I have had either an internal hemorrhoid or a tear/fissure for a couple weeks now after straining to go to the bathroom.  (I think it's internal b/c I don't really notice anything on the outside) I've had a pinching pain (like a scab being ripped) and small amounts of blood on the toilet paper most every time I go to the bathroom.  I went to the doctor earlier this week for something else, but asked about this as well.  She didn't examine me, but said that it sounded like one of those two problems.  She prescribed me hydrocortisone suppositories to use at night for 2 weeks.  Has anyone used these....do they help?  I've only used 2, so I don't know how much help it's giving yet, but the past two days I've actually had worse symptoms...same amount of pain, but now I see some blood on the stool itself...that's a little scary.  I'm not straining, but I think any amount of pushing makes it worse.  I'm trying to eat right so everything processes as smoothly as possible, but I'm curious how long it takes for either of these problems to heal.  Anyone have experience with the suppositories and/or have any more suggestions on how to speed up the healing process?

Yup... I'm using them now. They really do work, but it takes the full two weeks to do it's job. However, the pain returns once you are off them if you don't choke down a lot of fiber every day for the rest of your life....

Eat prunes with every meal and a stool softener for b-fast and you will see improved results...

Just my 2 cents...

I had the infra-red lazer treatment 5 or more years ago and it was WONDERFUL.  I had bad internal hemorrhoids that sometimes made the toilet red with blood.  HOWEVER, they are beginning to come back the last year or 2.

I went to the Dr. and was informed that the infra-red lazer has been abandoned because the cure, though initially wonderful, is not permanent. . .  this was a different Dr., however.  He gave me cortisone suppositories which after a week do seem to be greatly improving the situation.

I have now found that the infra-red coagulation method is expensive.  Perhaps that is the real reason Dr. 2 doesn't use it.  Expensive equipment?  Rebellion of the insurance companies?
