I was told I have Fatty Liver. My labs are all normal. But I still get symptoms of liver disease. Abdominal discomfort, itching, etc. What gives?

i am interested in this also--because my son has high liver functions and the doctor suggested a fatty liver. i would assume an ultrasound would be next.

How old is your son? Which liver tests are up? Does he have any symptoms? He may need an ultrasound, or a CAT scan/MRI, or a biopsy, or maybe none of them.

Is he overweight? If so by how much? Does he have any bowel disease like Crohns or Colitis?

he is slightly overweight but not obese and no known bowel diseases. he actually has high chol. so the blood tests were relatively routine----and they were high for the first time.this website is great for people to exchange ideas and share with others.

Probably Fatty Liver, but have the Doc check for biliary cholestatic conditions or diseases. Good Luck.

Hi, I was diagnosed with a fatty liver, after I took some blood tests and the ALT and AST were elevated, and the hepatitis tests ended up being negative. I had an ultrasound that indicated fatty infiltration of the liver.  I was getting nervous though tonight when I was reading something on liver cancer.  Does anyone know this, could it be a sign of liver cancer to have elevated liver enzymes?  I had a sonogram that only showed fatty infiltration, would cancer have probably showed up on that?  Also, I had a tumor marker blood test that came out in the normal range.  As for symptoms, with fatty liver, I do have fatigue, abdominal bloating, itching, alot of the things that you mentioned.  Also, I get the feeling like you fill up quickly when you eat.  I do need to loose weight, but it's just been hard.  I am not used to doing things for myself, and I know I have to do this, I got the note that says I have to come back in for my follow-up visit, and re-take the blood tests, but I don't see the point if I didn't loose weight yet.  Well, thanks for any info, and I hope you're all doing good.  Thanks, Val

An ultrasound exam would show whether or not a person has Fatty infiltration of the liver.  If you have fatty infiltration AND elevated liver enzymes on your blood work results the doctor should consider Non-alcoholic Steatohepatitis (NASH).  The only approved treatment for this is to lose weight.  The docotr should recommend that you lose one pound per week.  Losing weight more rapidly than that can damage the liver.  Look at the Liver Foundation website for the best information on any liver problem.  It is www.liverfoundation.org.

valger, I wouldn't worry about liver cancer, especially if the Doc isn't worried. Fatty liver is very common, as are the liver test elevations you mentioned. Don't worry.

I have checked every website I can find to get an answer to a question. And I guess I'm hoping you guys can help.  If you have a fatty liver is your spleen enlarged and scar tissue around your liver?  Blood tests came back normal but they are running more tests for Hep B and checking the ceruloplasmin levels in my blood along with the iron levels in my blood before they do a biopsy. If anyone has any experience with this please let me know. I've been going for a month with test after test and basically getting no answers. I'm constantly tired, I look like a monster with the yellow in my eyes and in pain all the time. I hope someone can help I guess to ease my mind a little.  Thanks in advance either way.

I have absolutely horrible (especially in the morning when i wake up) right rib pain from the front to the back.  I actually have to sleep lying face up.  If I turn on either side the pain sends me howling.  I was diagnosed with fatty infiltration of the liver due to alcohol abuse.  Has anybody out there lived thru this and from the research i have done on the internet it seems the ONLY cure for alchoholic steatohepatitis is to STOP drinking.  I keep planning on doing that.  Every next monday....lol.......but,,,my question:  After you stop drinking how long does it take the pain to go away?  I mean, it's not like i am a skid row bum,,,i work in a professional position and work every day,,,need some answers-inspiration,,,thanks for letting me vent.
