Dr. unsuccessful in removing all of polyp in 2 colonoscopies

by Jean300, Feb 04, 2008 08:58PM
I'm 63, female.  Had 1st colonoscopy as preventative measure (no symptoms).  Dr. discovered large polyp and said he removed most of it.  Said I'd have to have another colonoscopy in 6 months, because my colon was so twisted he was unable to remove entire polyp.  (He said the polyp is flat and spread out).

Polyp was benign.

6 months later I had 2nd colonoscopy.  Dr. said he could not remove the remaining polyp because my colon is too twisted and narrow.  Dr. said he could do a 3rd colonoscopy, or I could go to another doctor.  I chose to see another Dr.

When I saw the next doctor, he said he could not perform the colonoscopy, and doubted if there were any doctors who could.  He recommended I see a surgeon.

I saw a surgeon who specialized in laparoscopic surgery, but he said he would not do the surgery, because it was his understanding from reading 1st doctor's records that the polyp is very small.  He said I needed to talk to another Gastroenterologist - but, I'm wondering, what's the point?

If my colon is too twisted to do successful colonoscopies, am I just one of those unfortunate individuals who will have to take their chances with getting colon cancer, without recourse to treatment?

What do you suggest?

I agree with the workup thus far.

Unfortunately, there is a subset of the population that may have anatomical variation that precludes a colonoscopy.  An option for screening would be a CT-colonoscopy ("virtual" colonoscopy) or a barium enema.

However, if there is a suspicious polyp present that cannot be approached endoscopically, surgery may need to be considered.

Followup with your personal physician is essential.
