EGD with biopsy

EGD with biopsy

I am a 34 year old female who has been having GERD symtoms (symptoms) for the past few months. Saw a GI doc who started me on a PPI. Had an EGD done today that showed atrophic gastric mucosa. GI doc biopsied the area. I am freaking out while I wait for the results. Does anyone know what this might mean? I'm obviously concerned about gastric cancer and the poor prognosis associated with that diagnosis.

Don't freak out, seek out the cause of the problem, and that cause may be answered when the results of the biopsy come back. Atrophy of the gastric mucosa typically results from chronic gastritis associated with Helicobacter pylori infection or an autoimmune process. If H. pylori get it cleared up. If the problem is autoimmune speak with your doc about how to handle the pernicious anemia that may result.

thanks calgal for the words of encouragement, I called the dr office this morning and left a message to call me back- that I would like a little better explanation of what he had seen on endoscopy. But, alas, he did not call back. It just ***** to have to wait through the weekend for the results. My real big question is whether or not this condition is reversible? I went to the health food store today and bought the aloe vera juice that others have talked about and am willing to try anything else to make my stomach environment a little happier.
