Elevated Gamma GT and AST Levels - Advice Needed Please

by JellieBabie, Feb 10, 2002 12:00AM
My partner has just had his results back - Gamma GT is 126 and AST is 128. We have read that this is high. Hepatitis result is negative. He is 37 and drinks only normal strength larger (2-3 pints a day during the week and 5-6 pints a day at the weekend).

Just needing any advice or information from anyone please.

High GGT with an elevated AST is one of the signs of alcohol damage. (Fatty Liver aka Alcoholic Hepatitis).
(Other possibilities would be biliary problems).
I'm not a doctor....but if I were your friend I'd get checked for fatty liver.

Just a note.  Alcohol is only ONE possible cause of liver inflammation.  Many people have "fatty liver" (a type of liver inflammation caused by fat in the liver) and have never had any alcohol at all.  Sometimes being overweight can cause it.  Some people have it for unknown reasons.  In fact, fatty liver is also often called NONALCOHOLIC Steatohepatitis because it is not the same as alcoholic hepatitis.

I'm going threw the same thing right now, same types of elavations in my blood work, i'm a 28yr old healthy chick.  Although i tested negative for Hepatitis my doctor says i may have Autoammune Hepatitis, i guess this test is very quirky some people test postitive and don't really have it...i will be having furthur testing soon, since i was on the higher end of the chart.
