Elevated Lactate Dehydrogenase, significance to Lymphocytes

by Lea-Peterson, Dec 14, 1998 12:00AM

Recent lab results show values (European scale units)
  LYMF - 10.5 (Normal range 20-45)
  TROM - 108  (Normal range 150-500)
  LD   - 1162 (Normal range 0-540)
  KOL  - 3.9  (Normal range 3.5~5.9)
  KOL-HDL -0.46 (Normal range 1.0-0.0)
  HDL/KOL -12 (Normal range 20-0)
  KOL-LDL -2.1(Normal range 0-3.5)
  TRIGLY -2.87 (Normal range 0.4~ 1.7)
  HAPTOG -0.1(Normal range 0.3-2.0)
Of the Cholesterol values, HDL is below normal and LDL is normal, triglycerides are elevated (Unsat.Fat), but the most alarming value is the LD, explain a little what this shows as to enzymes in Liver? Doctor said only that this measures five(5) different enzymes (L1,L2..L5) and is a "composite value" ??
Haptoglobines measure shows RBC's lifespan at below 120 days.
  Thanks for any information.

Dear lea,
Because of my uncertainty regarding some of the abbreviations that you usefor lab tests my comments will be very general.  LDH is an enzyme found in many cells including those of liver, muscle and red blood cells. Damage to any of these organs can elevate LDH levels.  If your red blood cells have a shortened survival, the increased breakdown of these cells could explain an increased LDH level.  To conclude that the LDH was of liver origin I would like to see demonstrations that other liver tests e.g. ALT, AST, GGT are also increased.
This information is presented for educational purposes only.  Ask specific questions to your personal physician.
