Elevated SGPT and SGOT

by JamesJ71, Apr 14, 2006 12:00AM
I am a 34 yr old male 5'8 185lbs routine blood work on 09-12-05 revealed high cholesterol 226 with  LDL of 154 and triglycerides of 78. My sgot was 45 and sgpt was 110.About a year earlier I took Prevacid 30 mg for about 6 months and a few months before blood work was on antibiotic for a root canal. On 4-3-06 had blood work done again after watching diet cholesterol dropped to 193 triglycerides were 93 hdl was 49 and ldl 125. This time my sgpt was 91 sgot was 59 and alk phosphate was 129.Doctor said do follow up blood work in 3 months.I have been put back on prevacid 30 mg again for ulcer like symptoms doc also suggested upper gi and I also started taking zoloft 50 mg for anxiety, panic.I pretty much watch diet and drink very little except when i was in my 20s was moderate drinker only on weekends. One other note Mom has similar elevated readings on liver function tests and takes cholesterol and blood pressure med.I was just wondering if it could be genetic and if I should be worried with these numbers and what should be the next step. Any advice would be helpful.

Initial workup for these liver enzymes would be blood tests for hepatitis as well as a liver ultrasound.  The liver ultrasound would evaluate for major anatomical diseases or liver masses.

If negative, you can consider repeating the enzymes to ensure they are not rising.  If so, a liver biopsy can be considered for a more definitive evaluation.

These options can be discussed with your personal physician.

Followup with your personal physician is essential.

I had my first SGPT/SGOT tests in January 2006 and resulted to "slightly elevated" level. I had another test 2 weeks ago with the same result. I had a liver ultrasound that resulted to "mildly fatty liver". My doc wants me to have another round of tests that are different from 2 weeks ago's tests, one of which is cholesterol  level test.

My doc said there's nothing for me to worry, but I'm a bit freaked out. Any advice?

Thanks!

You need a full liver panel. Try to find a gastroenterologist who is ALSO a hepatologist, if you can.
