Eosinophilic Gastroenteritis/Enterocolitis

by Karen Kissel, Sep 17, 1999 12:00AM
My daughter has been given the diagnosis of Eosinophilic Gastroenteritis, she is 13 weeks old (dx. made due to age, screaming at the breast and 3 bloody stools).  I have eaten only about 5 things (chicken, rice, oats, zucchini, carrots, and squash, also salt, sugar, and olive oil) since 9/11 and yesterday we introduced breastmilk after 5 days on Nutramigen.  By 4p.m. she was screaming again at the breast. Is there anything else you can suggest?

Dear Karen,
I am sorry but we do not have the expertise to answer questions related to pediatric gastroenterology.  You may consider reposting your question to the Maternal-Child forum

Karen,

I have five kids (and myself) with eosinophilic GI disease.  There is a great deal of support generated on a list group the address is ***@****.  Unfortunately, this is a rare condition and little is known but they are coming up with treatments that work for some.

I need information on eosinophilic gastroenteritis

My almost 3 year old son was diagnosed with eosiniphillic gastroenteritis about 2 years ago.  Since that time, he has made little progress as far as much relief from this disease.  He has been on prednisone for almost 2 years, as well as various other meds. As a result of his condition, he has very bad motility.  He also has poor growth, and poor weight gain as a result. Does any one no of any medication or procedures that might help his motility and condition.  He has taken cisapride, reglan, and now is taking erythromiacin.  None of these meds have been very helpful.  I would greatly appreciate any information anyone may have.

I have a 4yr old son who has been diagnosed with EG and has now developed eosinophilic hepatitis. He has been on prednisone therapy which is controlling his bowel symptoms, but as the dosage has decreased, his liver enzymes have become more abnormal. There is now the concern of progressive liver damage. Drs do not want him to go onto high dose steriods due to the side effects. If anyone has any information or experience with this disorder, in particular, the involvement of the liver, I would greatly appreciate any input.

I am a 40 year old Australian male and have had bouts of eosinophilic gastroenteritis for the past 8 years. The symptons typically occur each year between June and August (winter). The normal course of treatment is steroid injections (about 3). This normally resolves the problem quickly. Can you provide any feedback on the possible causes. I do not have any known alergies (allergies) nor does my family.

My husband is 41 years old and was diagnosed with EG many years ago. His symptoms are now at their worst. He has lost an extensive amount of weight and cannot tolerate the predisone orally. I'd like to know if this medication can be given by I.V/. and how do I go about getting his physician to do this?  Any thoughts??
