Esopageal Spasms

by Violet, Jun 30, 2001 12:00AM
I recently had a gastric bypass stomach surgery.  Six weeks after surgery  I starting having trouble with food. After swallowing it felt as though it was hanging in my esopogus, and this would cause me to vomit. Sometimes 7-8 times a day. Later I had the barium swallow done and was diagnosed with esophogeal spasms.   And have been treated with Levsin for about six weeks, and now since June 1-01 have been taking Levbid ER.375 2 x daily. Although I am now not vomiting as much, I do still have difficulty and discomfort with solid foods and at times even liquids. Was told stress triggered this off. Is there further testing I should persue. This has become very uncomfortable for me. I cannot tolerate meats of any kind or food with any texturized foods. I live mostly on ensure and very liguidly foods such as broths and soups. Is there anything I can do to help alleviate any of these problems. I have never had any of these problems before the surgery. I did have acid reflux, and a hiatal hernia, before the surgery and was told the surgery would take care of these problems. Also now, I seem to keep a thick muscous type congestion in my throat and am constantly clearing my throat. At times it causes my voice to sound raspy. If the drainage ever gets to the stomack it causes severe nauseau.

Esophagial spasms are provoked mainly by solid food. You need soft warm (not hot, not cold) moist food till your problem will be eliminated.
Yes, stress worsens your condition.
Remedies: valerian tea, warm water bottle on chest, gentle relaxing massage of the chest, a strong magnet (north pole to the skin) till relief comes.
In short words, try everything that relaxes.

I hope it helps.
