Excessive bowel movements

by Jason__0, Apr 29, 1998 12:00AM

  Dear Drs.,
This problem is similar to the problem that "Jason" wrote about
only that I am female.  Last year, I gave up drinking milk
because an allergy test showed that I was allergic.  I switched
to Calcium supplements right away.  I have been experiencing
"excessive bowel movements" for about 6 months.  Sometimes I go
about 7-8 times a day.  It is formed, not diarrhea.  I have lost
about 15 pounds since last year.  I go to the doctor at least 2
times a year.  (Most recently for border-line pneumonia).
I am 36 years old and have never been pregnant. Right now, I am
taking an anti-biotic for a bladder infection.  Please respond
with any information.  Thank you.   K.B.

Dear K. Becce,
There are many possible causes for your symtoms of diarrhea and weight loss.  The investigation for lifestyle causes e.g. change in diet etc is applicable to you as it was for Jason.  If you have risk factors for AIDS you should be tested for the HIV infection.
Assuming that there are no obvious life style factors for your symptoms, you should be evaluated by a gastroenterologist.  Intestinal mucosal diseases that can cause malabsorption e.g. celiac disease, Crohn’s disease must be excluded.
This response is offered for your general information and should not replace the conclusions drawn from a careful and complete evaluation by your physician.
If you want, we would be happy to see you in the Division of Gastroenterology at Henry Ford Hospital and perform the appropriate investigations after we have had the chance to meet you and to review your history in greater detail. You can arrange an appointment with Dr. Fogel, one of our experts in the diagnosis and treatment of diarrheal disorders, by calling the Henry Ford Physician Referral Line at (800)653-6568.
