Fatty Liver on CT

by scort42, Jun 05, 2008 04:40PM
One month ago, I had an abdominal ultrasound.  It was "normal".   Regarding my liver, the actual report reads "The liver is unremarkable".

Due to some continued digestion issues, I just had an abdominal CT scan with and without contrast.  That, too, came back "normal" with one exception - fatty liver.

I have had my liver enzymes checked three times in the last six months - always normal.  In fact, I have bloodwork 1-2x per year and they are always normal.

I have had my abdomen examined by multiple physicians - not once has anyone indicated anything about my liver.

So, this CT report has caught me off guard.  I did drink socially and often for a couple years, but quit a few months ago.  Not a drop since.  I have also lost 15 pounds in an effort to get into better shape.

My main two questions are:
1) If this was only picked up on the CT and my numbers are normal, is it possible that my liver may not be all that "fatty" yet?
2) I have read that the liver is impressive on healing itself (somewhat) over time with proper diet and exercise.  Is that true?
3) Is there any other testing that should be done on my liver or should I just stay sober, eat right and exercise?

Thanks!

To answer your questions:
1) Normally, the CT scan would be more sensitive in determining if fatty liver was present or not.

2) Treating fatty liver would depend on the cause.  Alcohol use and NASH (non-alcoholic steatohepatitis) are the most common causes.

Abstaining from alcohol, and weight loss would the treat these aforementioned conditions.

3) If the liver enzymes rise, a liver biopsy can be considered for a more definitive diagnosis.
