What should I expect for my first Gastro appoint? I have it later today due to 2 episodes of bleeding (very small amount) and IBS symptoms lasting the past few years - mostly due to the blood. This is just an appointment not the colonoscopy yet. However, I think I will be having that at a later date. Do they tell you the results the day of the exam for the colonscopy?
I can't speak to how other docs operate, but mine always discusses the results of the procedure with the person who accompanies me - my hubby. At that time, he also gives him copies of pictures that were taken and explains what's on them, and a sheet for post-colonoscopy care and things to watch for afterward. If any meds are needed, he will include a prescription. In over 10 scopes, I've never had any complications.
You'll usually have a follow-up appointment after the scope, at which time the doc will tell you personally what was, or was not, found. My doc always gives me a copy of the procedure the report.
Your first appointment will probably involve a quick rectal
smear to determine if you have any blood present at this time. Please don't worry about this part! It should literally take only a couple of seconds. Yeah, it's not the most pleasant thing in the world, but at least it's quick. Other than that, it's mostly a discussion of your symptoms to determine what diagnostic procedures might be necessary.
