Found Gallstones, doctors says to get gallbladder out, should I??

I never had an operation before and I'm a little scared about having this operation.  Over the years I've had abdomen pain and bloating and severve pain that lasted over several hours.  Nothing would get rid of it, I had to ride it out.  But these episodes only would occure about 3 times a year. Finally I told my doctor and he gave me vicodin (only 10) for the pain.  It relieved my pain.  He sent me for ultrasound recently and gallstones were present and he called me and said that I should get the gallbladder removed.  My question is this--I don't have the pain alot only when I eat certain foods.  Should I go ahead anyways and do the surgery?  Could someone explain the actually surgery to me and what I should expect? Thanks, Connie
