Frequent urination and calf twitching

by dcg615, Mar 07, 2004 12:00AM
I have been diagnosed with IBS for 20 years and most of the time have it under control.  I do not have diarrea (diarrhea) or constipation but only colon spasms that make me feel weak, sweaty and light headed.  During the last two years, I have noted that I also get particularly intense calf twitching during colon spasm episodes.  These are particularly noticeable when my legs are relaxed.  Xanax seems to relieve all of the symptoms including the colon spasms, sweating, light headedness and calf and leg muscle twitching.  Although I only take .25 miligram tablets, most often cut in half on a two time per day basis, I don't like to do that as I am afraid that Xanax could be habit forming.  Consequently, I only take the medication on the very rare occassions when the symptoms are severe.  My questin is two-fold.  How could colon spasms cause calf twitching, urination frequency and sweating and are these common symptoms for IBS sufferers?  Also, why does the Xanax relieve the symptoms and can the dosages that I take be habit forming?

I do not have a good explaination how colon spasm can cause calf twiching and the ther symptoms you describe.  I am not aware of calf twiching being common symptoms in IBS, although this may certainly be possible.

Antispasmodic agents (Bentyl or Levsin) have been studied with moderate success in those with IBS symptoms.  Benzodiazapines such as Xanax have had less success, and may also help with the spasm.  The studies with Xanax are not as comprehensive.  It is generally not recommended that Xanax be used on a long term basis, because any dose that is taken can be habit forming.

Regarding the muscle cramps - common causes can be electrolyte abnormalities such as potassium or calcium disorders.  These can  be easily tested for.
