From slight pain on the right to gas discomfort

by Mario-Machado, Oct 22, 1998 12:00AM

Approximateley 1 month ago I went to bed and felt a funny feeling
like ants moving around on my right side front, between my ribs and my hip
When I was lying on that side. This has improved and I no longer
feel the ants and the pain even when I am lying on that side
has reduced to occassionaly and only slight. However as this was
improving I started to develope discomfort from gas pressure in my
abdomen just below my ribs. The pain from the gas shifted
from side to center sometimes and felt like it was just rumbling around
in my stomach. This gas problem also has improved and where
when it first started I had to unbuckle my pants for relief, now
it is occassional and slight some days being almost
imperceptible and other times being more bothersome. My Doctor
has told me that the problem is muscular and prescribed nothing.
After he told me this I remembered that I had been picking up some
heavy office furniture around the time it started. I never noticed
anything immediatley after wards however and thus the reason I never
associated the furniture moving with the pain in the side.
However, it has been 1 month and has not gone completely away, also when I sit and
bend forward it sometimes feels like there is a bulge on the right side
I have been worried sick about this and attributed the stomach
gas to the worrying along with my Doctor. When I wake up the pain
in my side is non existent and usually begins to bother me a
little by days end However I am still
worried and wondering if I should wait to see what happens or
hurry up and get some testing done?

Dear mario,
If your symptoms started after physical exertion, it is possible that you have a muscle strain or possibly a hernia.  Gas pains and noises are a common
complaint.  Usually , the problem relates to either excessive air swallowing or to irritable bowel syndrome.  You may wish to increase the amount of fiber in your diet to
see if there is any change in your symptoms.  Be warned that when you start the fiber there will be increased gas discomfort but as your bowel movements become
larger ans softer, this gas problem will subside.
